"Can't Stop The Violence, I Love It"

"Can't stop the violence, I love it, no one's immune from the hate that flows from it" Slayer - Violence (2003)

Todays lecture on social cohesion, and mostly Freud's impact on the thinking (or be that re-thinking) of social networking interested, confused and frustrated me. I am very interested in the questions that pose around 'Society', whether that be what the great thinkers and idealists believe, or the more practical elements that you see in day to day life.

The Freudian overtones disucssed in the lecture were slightly going over my head, it certainly is interesting to discuss, but the practical implications I think are a little far fetched, possible due to trandations and moral values chaning over the years. I personally would like to have discussed the link between 'civilization' and violence and hatred more, as I firmly believe that as we 'advance', at least in ecomonic terms, we become more violent and practice hatred on a greater level, and the worrying thing is it is now alot more accepted.

A really interesting point made was about values that are gained after the death of a father/grandfather figure. I can think back to countless occasions, of my own family and others, were grandparents would be casually racist, but because of their background it is accepted, and treated as if there were no derogatory overtones, however after the passing of such figures, those people themselves who were disgusted by such racism take it on board. It certainly is something I'd like to look at further

Just a quick post to get the ball rolling :)
